My father had a favorite saying: “The big possum walks just before the dawn”. He didn’t make it up, he got it from his father, who probably got it from his. You could say it’s sort of the family motto. As advice goes, it’s not too bad, though “Don’t trust your roommate with the car keys on dollar pitcher night” might have been more useful.
When we started this project, the spirit of this saying just seemed to fit who we were and what we were trying to do. Unfortunately, BigPossum.com was already taken (for sale, bids starting at…). We can get into opinions on people holding domains they never intend to use some other time. For now, we’re PossumPublications.Com. The Big is just going to have to be implied.
Our first approach at a logo was to take advantage of the possum-like qualities of the letter ‘g’ by simply hanging it upside down from the title:
Of course, this ended up looking like crap. Plus, we were now the Bi Possum. While we enthusiastically support everyone’s right to live and love as they see fit, we felt this image might limit our target audience, just a bit.
Then we thought, “Why not hang an actual possum from the title?” We gave it a couple of test runs using images ‘borrowed’ from the internet and knew we had a winner. Now all we had to do was find our own possum. Turns out, for all their inability to cross a county road without meeting a car, it’s hard to just whistle up a possum when you need one. After a couple of weeks staking out dumpsters and waking up just before the dawn, we were tempted to change our name to Big Pigeon.
Then, salvation from the Big Possum himself. Along with pithy sayings, Daddy also liked to draw a little. Cleaning out a storage unit, we came across an old leather portfolio full of drawings he had made when he was still in high school. Among then was a depiction of an epic possum hunt.
Perfect.
Now all we had to do was extricate Mr. Possum from his dire situation, clean him up and hang him from his new home.
I think you’ll agree he looks happier now.
*No possums were harmed in the making of this logo. (though we can’t be too sure about the one in the original drawing…)
